Treatments - Retainers

When active treatment is completed it is important to have a period of retention. Retainers are designed to keep your teeth straight. If retainers are not worn then your teeth are likely to drift back to their original positions.

- WHY DO I NEED RETAINERS?

The retainers hold the newly straightened teeth in position whilst the surrounding gum and bone settles.

- HOW LONG DO I WEAR THEM FOR?

The retention process does take time, so be patient. On average the retainers are worn full time for 6 months, then wear is gradually reduced over 6 months.

- WEAR THEM!

After meals be sure to clean your retainers. It is also important to frequently soak them in a sterilizing agent - we recommend 'Retainer Brite'

- KEEP THEM CLEAN!

The wires are put in and tied to the brackets with tiny elastics. These are available in many different colours and can be changed during treatment if you wish.

- HANDLE THEM WITH CARE!

Retainers are easier to lose than you think, and replacing them is expensive! Make sure you put them in the retainer box provided whenever they are not in your mouth. Retainers have a habit of falling on the floor and being stepped on, or even being picked up and chewed by pets!
