- CAN ANYONE BE TREATED? Orthodontic treatment is generally easiest and best carried out in children, but it is possible for adults to have treatment too. An increasing number do and we currently have many adult patients wearing fixed appliances. - WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? You will have a full examination which includes looking closely at the teeth and taking x-rays and models of your mouth. It is possible that there may not be enough room in your mouth for all your permanent teeth, so it may be necessary to extract teeth to make space. You will be advised if this is necessary. Often, space can be made by other forms of treatment such as arch expansion or the use of headgear.- WILL IT HURT? All appliances may feel strange to begin with and can cause some discomfort, but your mouth will soon get used to the brace and this will soon settle. - HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? The length of treatment usually depends on the severity of the original problem and may take anything from a few months to two-and-a-half years. Once the treatment is complete removable retainers are worn to hold the teeth in position whilst they settle.- HOW MANY VISITS? It is usually necessary to adjust any orthodontic appliance at 4-6 week intervals. - IS ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT PERMANENT? Even after retention it is normal for minor tooth movement to occur throughout life, so no permanent guarantee can be given. However, it is unusual for teeth to alter sufficiently to require further treatment. |
